Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon – 2025 Registration & 2024 Results
Mt. Everest, Nepal | May 29, 2025 | Registration Open |
Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is held annually on 29th May to commemorate the first successful Everest climb by Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary on 29th May 1953. Being held since 2003, the event was only canceled thrice- once in 2015 (Nepal earthquake) and then in 2020 & 2021 (Covid).
The race is organized by BufoVenturest Ltd – a non-profit- organization – which puts all profits into a fund that helps support health & educational projects in Nepal and has raised £631,000 ($834,000US) to date.
The event is held at the base camp of Mount Everest situated in the Sagarmatha National Park and offers runners varied races they can choose to participate in including a half marathon, marathon, and an extreme ultra-marathon.
- Half Marathon: The half marathon is a run open only for non-Nepalis. The route is a trekking trail and mostly downhill, the run is still challenging for both beginners and seasoned runners.
- Marathon: The Everest Marathon is officially the highest marathon in the world where marathon runners need to make a trek to the Everest base camp and climb to Kala Patthar at a height of 5,643m to even start the race.
- Extreme Ultra: While both the half marathon and marathon mainly travel downhill, the 70K extreme ultra track has some uphill running involved. This category has one of the most advanced running routes with tough uphill running tracks.
The race is fully marshaled with attendants & drink stations at regular checkpoints. Not only is the race distance measured precisely and as per standards, but there is also an official timekeeper as well. While the marathon has a participation limit of around 250 runners across all categories, usually fewer than 50 runners participate given the tough terrain and weather conditions.
